Boots & Moccasins Chuckwagon & Powwow Weekend will be held at Evergreen Park June 15-17.
It will feature wagons from the Western Chuckwagon Association competing in their second sanctioned event of the season as well as a powwow including drummers and dancers from across the region.
The chuckwagon portion of the event goes Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday’s racing will start at 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, all at Gordon Badger Stadium, at 5 p.m. The powwow goes Saturday and Sunday with 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. grand entries. It is being held indoors in the ENTREC Centre.
The Boots & Moccasins moniker was the result of a Facebook event-naming contest put on by the organizers of the event – the WCA and Grande Prairie Powwow Committee. Over 125 suggestions were entered with the winning entry being submitted by Heather Robinson.
Boots & Moccasins is the second stop on the WCA tour, which begins with the Grande Prairie Stompede at Evergreen Park May 30-June 3. The WCA is made up of amateur drivers competing on a circuit around the Peace Country until mid-August.
The racing will also include chariots.
Admission for the chucks/chariots portion of the event is $10 for adults/seniors/teens and free to those 12 and under.
Besides dancers and drummers, the powwow portion of the event, the second annual Grande Prairie Powwow, will include booths featuring Indigenous crafts and food.
Admission cost for the powwow is $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and youth and free to those three and under. There are no pre-sale admissions for either event. Tickets will be available at the door at Badger Stadium for the chucks and the ENTREC Centre for the powwow.
