Locals Have Success Outdoors

Several local fighters had success Saturday at XFFC 15: Heat Wave.It was the first time an MMA event was held outdoors in Alberta, according to even organizers. The XFFC event was held at Evergreen Park.

In a 155lbs pro bout, Grande Prairie’s Alex Martinez submitted Edmonton’s Damian Johnston by rear-naked choke in the the second round (3:55). Martinez improved to 3-0.

In a local pro bout, Grande Prairie’s Randy Mahon defeated William Quintal by majority decision (30-27, 30-27, 28-28). Mahon improved to 3-2.

Saturday’s third pro bout featured Calgary’s Keegan Oliver and Kelowna’s Kevin Kellerman. Oliver won the bout via unanimous decision ((30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

Amateur bouts

Red Deer’s Solomon Courtoreille captured the XFFC Amateur Featherweight title via split decision against Brandon Gardener (49-46, 47-48 and 48-47).

In another local bout, Justin Knoepfli defeated Grey Patino via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28).

Calgary’s Steven Thomas submitted Brody Zariwny 33 seconds into the first round with an armbar.

 

Todd Vatcher defeated Dylan Schellenberg 49 seconds into round one with a TKO (knee injury).

Sexsmith fighter Jackson Fontaine lost his bout via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) against Shane Melnyk.

 

Grande Prairie’s Joe Westbrook won over Justin Bulbeck via guillotine choke in the second round (1:59).

 

Other amateur bouts included: Usman Khattak defeating Riley Kilpatrick via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28), and Josh Eggie defeating Drew Kirizopoulos via TKO (punches) in the third round.
