Learn How To Bet On The Horses!

Basic Bets

Win

Your horse must finish 1st.

Place

Your horse must finish 1st or 2nd

Show

Your horse must finish 1st, 2nd, or 3rd

Quick Picks

Ask for a Quick Pick and state the track, the type of bet, and the amount of the bet and then a horse will be randomly selected for you.  There’s no reason why you can’t pick based on favorite colours, numbers, or horse names.  Blind luck can easily beat an educated guess.

What Do I Say?

It’s simple, when asking for a bet, you say:

  1. The name of the track
  2. The amount you want to bet
  3. The type of bet
  4. The number of the horse

For Instance, “I’d like Evergreen Park, $2 to win on #5.”

Exotic Bets

Exactor

Try to pick the first 2 horses to cross the finish line.  They must finish in the exact order you designate when purchasing your ticket.

Quinella

Try to pick the first 2 horses to cross the finish line, in either order.

Triactor

Try to pick the first 3 horses to cross the finish line, in the exact order.

Superfecta

Try to pick the first 4 horses to cross the finish line, in the exact order.

Daily Double

Try to pick the winning horse in two consecutive races.

Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 6, Pick 7

Try to pick the winning horse in 3, 4, 6, or 7 consecutive races.

Boxing Feature Bets

When you box a bet, essentially you are giving yourself every possible combination of the horses you select in a feature race.  For instance, in an Exactor race, if you “box” horse #1 and horse #2, you will have a ticket with two bets – 1 & 2 and 2 & 1.

The Oddity of Odds

Contrary to what you may think, the odds are determined by how much money is bet on each horse, not by the racetrack.  Essentially, the more money wagered on a horse, the more people share in the “pool”, the less the horse will pay.  Odds are posted on the TV monitors throughout the grandstand and change depending on the amount of money bet.

If a horse is listed at 10-1, it means that for a $2 bet on that horse, you would receive approximately $22 should that horse win.

Here are some examples on a $2 bet

Odds    1/2      8/5    2/1    7/2    10/1
Pays     $3 $5.20   $6   $9   $22

How much do I have to bet?

The minimum amount of each bet is $2.  The option of purchasing $1 tickets is also available when you are “boxing” two or more horses in an exotic bet.
