Grande Prairie’s first Indigenous Celebration featuring Indian Relay Racing received a major boost this week.

Ovintiv, a leading North American exploration and production company with operations in the Grande Prairie area, has signed on as the presenting sponsor of the event for the next two years.

“Ovintiv’s Indigenous Relations team focuses on building and maintaining strong, positive relationships in the communities where we operate,” said Tyson Pylypiw, Ovintiv’s Indigenous Relations Manager. “We have been operating in the area for over 20 years, and felt it was important to be a partner in the inaugural Indigenous Celebration and Indian Relay Races, in support of the preservation of Indigenous culture.”

The Indigenous Celebration Presented By Ovintiv is being held June 8-9 at J.D.A. Raceway at  Evergreen Park.

One of the highlights of the weekend will be the first-ever Indian Relay Race competition in Grande Prairie.

“We are very excited to welcome Ovintiv as our presenting sponsor as we partner to showcase Indigenous crafts, dancing and Indian Relay Racing,” said Evergreen Park General Manager Kim Randall. “The event promises a full day of thrilling races celebrating Indigenous heritage and culture.”

Twenty teams from across Alberta and Saskatchewan will be participating in the relay races. There will also be drummers and dancers; tipis; Indigenous arts and crafts; and Bannock Tacos.

“Held on the homeland of Treaty 8 Territory, we deeply appreciate the contributions from our local First Nations in bringing this event to life, including a traditional ceremony by elders blessing the horses and grounds to ensure the safety of all participants,” Randall said.

Tickets for the event are currently on sale here. They are $25 for those 18-64; $15 for elders/seniors (65 and over) and youth 11 to 17; and free to those 10 and under.
